This piece was inspired by a news report about the discovery of microplastics in the snow in the arctic. While this shouldn’t really be surprising, given that plastic is polluting everywhere else on the planet, there is something about the perceived purity of snow that makes this more shocking. The swirls in the sky are made from plastic bottle tops, and represent pollution blowing in on the wind. They are surrounded by salvaged marble and scrap/leftover glass. Other bits of the bottle tops are used throughout the rest of the mosaic, becoming part of the snowy landscape. The larger stone-like pieces are made from dried out tile adhesive mixed with glitter, which represents the microplastics in the snow. The piece is build on an undulating hand made substrate to give it added dimension.
